Leonardo
sketches

As mechanism will most likely take a part within my art I have decided to focus a small amount of the mechanical designs of Leonardo da Vinci, with the purpose of these sketches to improve freehand designs in the future, in addition to this these designs also are drawn mostly in pen and pencil to show the structure clearly.

Leonardo
horses
Using the I have used freehand sketching to draw hoses in this
style, one in profile to showcase a suit of armour and another in a pose of
motion. I have chosen to use horses within this sketch as they are relatively
easy for me to sketch, in addition to this horses often feature within
Leonardo’s sketches as many weapons that were designed were either worn or
drawn by horses. The mediums that I have used on this page are pencil and fine
liner to represent the sketches and designs and the difference in from between
them, with the pen being used over pencil in the stratified stages of creating
a sketch.
wire
sculptures

using the art of Elizabeth Berrien as inspiration I have created a
series of wire sculptures using a variety of processes to create different
outcomes from laying wire. The art of Elizabeth Berrien mostly consists of
natural subjects such as horses, foxes and other animals with a variation of
two and three dimensional sculptures.
By layering one strand of thin wire I have sculpted a dragonfly
and a butterfly. This was achieved by creating simple 3D outlines in which I
layered over to give shape. The main representation in using wire to create
fragile creatures is to how a juxtaposition between the string and malleable
wire and the rigid and fragile insects. The only real issue that I have found
with this method does take quite a bit of time and as the size of the sculpture
increases the amount of time needed to make it increases massively in
comparison.
Brook
Using one of my Photoshop projects as a reference I have made a
two dimensional sculpture of an altered image of my dogs head, this allowed a
more abstract appearance to be achieved as oppose to a more accurate
representation of how an animal is supposed to look. The issue with this piece
is despite is it made from the same medium as my chosen artist it still does
not fit with the style or the intentions of my work, and as a result of that I
do not intent to create future pieces in this style, however I do like the two
dimensional style as it is both sculpture and easier to store, in addition to
this it takes much less time to make than a 3D sculpture.
Using the sketch of the horse I used its form as an outline to
sculpt a two dimensional wire sculpture to add emphasis on the element of
lines, for the body plain silver wire was used and multi-coloured wire used for
the mane and tail, the resulting effect was better than expected and when
compared with and when used to layer on additional surfaces I found the black
and prismatic background to have the best effects as it allowed the
multi-coloured mane and tail to blended with the background while the silver
wire juxtaposed with the black paper.
Spider
the smallest of the sculptures among the dragonfly however this
sculpture has been made to be sturdier and less likely to bend out of shape or
unravel, I achieved this by using double strands instead of just one making the
small sculpture far less delicate, however it did make it harder to construct
as together the strands are less malleable. This method of sculpting wire is
certainly more structurally stable, however it does take longer to carry out
which is a major issue within this subject.
Similar to the horse this two dimensional fawn has been made using
a single strand of wire that has been sculpted into the form of a seated fawn. To
create this I used an image taken at the nature notes exhibition at the Herbert
art gallery of a stuffed fawn as a reference.
Leonardo
overlay pages
A later piece in which the original pages were scanned and then
overlaid with fine liner to achieve elements of stratification and progression,
also to connect the current pages with the more mechanical side of my theme
using the same medium as most of my other technology based pieces. within this
I used the bucking horse and wings as a base to overlay the horse with
technology and the structure with muscle.
Science
fiction in steampunk style
Often steampunk is considered a juxtaposition of science fiction
as in stead of developing electricity and other means of power the intention is
to remain in an age of steam powered contraptions in which became more complex
into various mechanisms. as a result of this I have decided to create an
experimental using science fiction and redesigning it in a steampunk style in
which I have used an AT-RT from starwars, a
cyberman from doctor who and a tallneck from horizon: zero dawn. I used these
base designs and overlaid them with steampunk style designs in brown pen, I
then added another layer gluing cogs to small areas. despite the lack of
relevance to my overall theme I am happy with the technique of laying three dimensional
over two dimensional, in addition to this it is easier to create 2D wire
figures using these lines as they are bold and easy to trace.
Using harmonious shades to draw the outline of a deer and wolf
from a side view multiple times in different stages of movement to create an
image in the style of an animation. These were drawn using fine liner pens and
switching colour for each drawing, the drawings themselves were drawn using
slightly different techniques, the deer was drawn without the use of pencil
reference lines and simply drawn one frame at a time, while the wolf was drawn
with a greater amount of caution wising pencil as a reference in which all of
the legs were drawn first and then the rest added. Due to the difference in
amount of care taken and resulting quality the wolf frames have the best
appearance.
Horse,
wolf, fox anatomical sketches
Partially exposing bone and muscle this series of sketches focus
on the study of anatomy and the layering of biological components, within this
fine liner pens have also been used allowing for quick but also bold sketches
to be made, they can also be layered over each provided that being a darker
colour over a lighter one, such as reds used for muscle over the creams used
for bone. This series main benefit is that they are relatively quick to
complete considering how long my art usually takes with each taking a maximum
of half an hour to complete. However personally I do not like using a sketchy
style and prefer to include as much detail as possible and as a result some may
become overcomplicated.
My least favourite so far as during the rush to complete
work some many of the elements appear out of proportion such as the head
appearing too large, however this is the first in the series in which I was
still finding my grounding, however the colour scheme did appeal and as a
result was continued into other images within the series.
Wolf
Reflecting on the issues within the first piece I decided to
focus on creating an image as a gradient of flesh muscle and bone as if to peel
the layers back, for this I decided to use the bold lines of fine liners to
show the graphic details of this design. after completing this piece, I feel it
went much better than previous drawing of a horse representing the theme of
stratification much better.
Wolf
improvements
Seeing that the image itself, despite appearing better than
the horse it is not a very outstanding piece, therefore I decided to improve
this by adding elements of juxtaposition using metal to expand and on a
photocopy of the original piece adding more layers to the image. as this
appears to have been improved with the addition of a metallic layer I intend to
apply this method to other pieces of such nature.
fox
staying within the canid comfort zone I created another
image in this style from a front angle in hope of achieving more impact within
this, fortunately it does have greater impact drawing focus to the eyes,
however this image is not as well executed as the other and does not advertise
the use of stratification as the other does.
Fox improvements
After the improvements to the wolf sketches I decided to
also improve the fox in a similar way in which I used fine liner to add elements
of mechanism to the drawing. Adding elements of mike Libby’s style of using
mechanical components as a replacement for bones and muscles of the portrait.
Snake
Unlike the other pieces in this style I have instead decided
to use an existing image that had been created earlier for the MAD museum sketches.
For this I have used fine liner pen to sketch the skull muscles and scales
graduating from the snout to the body, the snake has been drawn coiling around
an image of a sculpture from the MAD museum. Overall this images does have a
good appearance using older elements and layering over them, however using
inanimate objects does make it less relevant than the other pieces.
Wolves
For this I have decided to draw more wolves and study canine
forms in greater detail, for this I have drawn the skeletal and muscular
system, in addition to this I have also used drawn a robotic recreation of the
skeleton, for these I have used fine liner pen like with the others to allow
the different structures to clearly be shown as different layers.
Paint on photographs
The fastest method of creating art that I have been using
this far, this involves the use of primary colours selectively painted onto a
greyscale image to appear to be bleeding from the animals, replacing defining
features with colour layering them with a combination of colour and absence of
colour. the process of applying the paint was achieved by applying generous
amounts and mixing on the paper to create a marbled mixture. this is also one
of the least linked methods of creating art as it does not directly link to my
artists, however the closest artist to this method would most likely be peony
yip through the use of overlaying identifying features such as the face,
however the representation is less about identity rather than the layers of
reality and the colours that stain a monotone existence.
Bird
One of my personal favourites apart from the cheetah I
attempted to make the paint appear as if running down the features of the bird
using red and yellow at the top with blue hints toward the edges. the photo of
the bird was taken during a visit to London zoo in the walk-in aviary.
Monitor
Following the scale pattern this time using dots of the
primary colours instead of merging all of them as much, this one does not have
the same appeal as the others so I do not intent to use this method in the
future.
Duck
this photo was taken in the gardens of the natural history
museum London, for this I have used a slightly different technique in which I
have coved a larger area and flowed the grain of the biology as opposed to
following a dripping down approach, however this technique is potentially my
least favourite of all of this series, in addition I feel I have included too
much area of colour anyway, and as a result I do not intend to use this method
of painting this way in the future.
Cheetah
Retiring back to my initial approach I used with the bird
with the exception of covering the cheetah’s spots as well. like the bird this
is only a portrait, making it easier to recreate the method in. however I do
prefer the bird because of the softer shades against the varying colours as the
phot of the cheetah was taken from behind glass as well as the subject being in
shadow while the photo of the bird was part of a walk-in aviary.
This photo was taken at the natural history museum in London
from within a display case amongst various other insects, for this image I
continued to follow the technique that has worked so far and used the wings as
a focus point for the colour, however the image would most likely been improved
if I had refrained from including colour in areas such as the antenna and
abdomen as they distract from the wings and disrupt the inward flow of colour.
Fawn
Taken at the Herbert art gallery, Coventry, within the nature
notes exhibition. with this image, I continued to paint as if the colours were
running, however in addition with piece I also included paint going against the
grain around the legs of the fawn. I was more sceptical about this particular
painting, however after completion it appeared better than anticipated.
Jamie
Using monotone in addition to the reds, yellow and blue I
used a photo of a college friend as a base to add paint to. this one is another
one of my favourites as I have taken a new step to developing this work. the
main changes that I have made are the wider range of colours that I have used,
as I have included black and white marbled, in addition to this I have used a
colour image instead of black and white, though I have still used elements of
the previous technique in which I painted the colours to appear as if they are
bleeding from the image, in addition to this I have added spots of colour.
overall I am pleased with the result of this image as I did not expect the pain
to work as well on a coloured image as it does, as well as the inclusion of
black and white paint also having a greater appearance than what was expected.
Doe
Taking inspiration form the previous steampunk work I have
decided to freehand a doe connecting to various steam pipes using a steampunk
style, with the doe at one side connected to three pipes that split and
convolute into several others that trail off the page. This piece in intended
to appear as a mix of the art styles of mike Libby, Elizabeth Berrien and
Andrew chase, as I have used Andrew chases designs as a base, however I have
included a steampunk element in the style of mike Libby replacing innards with
mechanisms and used line art to show a wired appearance. Personally I do like
how this image has resulted with the use of positive and negative space,
however the time it has taken to make is a problem, therefore if I intend to
use this style in the future I will have to ensure that future pieces do not
take as long.
In all honesty I was intending to simply draw a rat skull in
the same style as the doe, however I had made the mistake of drawing the image
upside down, therefore to build upon that I added the skull of a bird in to
give a new representation to what was intended, now showing the pests of the
air and land joined by industry and construction in which they thrive together.
For this I have also used an additional material of small metallic gears around
the eyes and some features of the creatures so accentuate the steampunk theme.
Like the previous piece the time was an issue but less so in this case, however
the addition of a new material has improved the image and as a result I will
most likely use this in the future.
The inspiration for this piece came from Johann Kraus from the second hellboy film in
which his gaseous form is used to animate an artificial body, within this I
have opted to use a lighter blue with a dark brown to give luminescence to the
image of the spectral rat. in conclusion for this drawing I am very happy with
the results as it represents my theme of stratification through the use of
nature and mechanism represented through surrealism, as a result of this I will
be using this method in the future.
Horses
using a scan of the Leonardo horses I have used fine liner
pen to layer over the scan of the image with steampunk elements
Snake
For this drawing I have created a mechanical snake using
pencil to draw and shade the image,
The main issue with this is that pencil drawing can take a
long time to complete, which in this circumstance can be an issue considering
the timescale of the course.
Masks
In many cases stratification, can be considered layering a
personality over another, to create a metaphorical mask to represent an ideal
personality and hide undesirable traits, to achieve this I have decided to use
the art of peony yip as inspiration in using animals to hide a face,
representing animalistic traits that are valued such as the loyalty of a hound
or the intelligence of a raven. in addition to this peony also uses bold
colours to create these masks, favouring reds for the animal portraits and
black for the human subjects.
Rat
More of a spontaneous piece in which depicts a child interacting
with three mechanical rats wearing a rat mask. Drawn in fine liner pen over a
pencil sketch have used a slightly different colour scheme with pinks for
elements of the dress such as the bows
Ram and raven
Representing strength
both physically and mentally this depicts masks in the shape of a ram’s skull
and the head of a raven in a stylised method. For this I have used fine liners
to draw these as this allows for a fast drawing with bold colours. I do believe
this style works well as a composition however I am beginning to feel that it's
potential for use as a final outcome is limited.
Dragon and unicorn
Following on with the
masks theme I have decided to move into more of a fantasy theme as opposed to
recreating reality. Like the others I have used fine liners to show a wired
appearance
Bluebird
Using a more elegant design and colder colours I have
redesigned the redbird piece to better match the masks sub-genre in which I
have used various shades of blue fine liners to create an elegant looking bird
mask over mechanical facial features. With this I like the juxtaposition
between the curved and jagged line that layer over one another.
Rough sketch overlays
after a lesson of art in which a series of rough sketches
experimenting with various mediums such as graphite and charcoal I decided to
copy any layer over with pen and cogs using the original lines as a base. The
primary purpose of these sketches is to use the theme of stratification in both
a literal sense and to cover the fantasy subgenre using sub themes of steampunk
and the inclusion of animalistic aspects.
Using mike Libby for inspiration I created a small series of
compositions using images of insects that i had taken and then gluing gears
onto specific areas such as the thorax or onto elements of the exoskeleton. The method that I have used to make these is the use
of photographs that I had taken at various locations. This method is definitely
up for consideration as a final, however I doubt I will be able to create any
more due to a lack of resources.
Sheep and wolf playing on the term a wolf in sheep's clothing I have used the style of Peony yip to create the image of a wolf and a sheep overlapping. This image was drawn using red and black fineliners to create the bold outlines like in Peony yips work. This is more of a style experiment in recreating the style of an artist, however I do not see much potential for this style because of the limitations of mediums and the time it would take to create something more complex.
Cat and mouse
continuing on the predator pray sub-genre I have used the same colour scheme to so various sketches of cats and mice overlapping. To ensure that I did not want to continue this theme I decided I to create this.

Photoshop
Tech brook
Using technology and nature I spliced images of various
electrical devices such as wires and game controllers onto an image of my dog,
in which these images were organised to follow the lines and structure of the
muscles to give a cyber-organic appearance through the application of
manipulating layers. The effects applied to this image are also in place to
bring out the lined and layered aspects such as using the glowing edges and cut
outs.
Using a similar technique as with my dog I used electrical
devices and metals to layer over the image of the bird to give a bionic
appearance as if parts were natural and parts were constructed. However, it
does not look as appealing as what was used for the dog, this may be due to the
lack of definition on muscle structure as it is harder to see through feathers
or the lack of concentration in a single area.
Using the photo of a cheetah as a base in which I used the blue wooden
texture to replace the spots in addition to adding a new background, adorning
the head are a series of bird wings in which each one has its colour changed.
The overall image has a series of effects layered over, such as the glowing
edges and others. Personally, this is one of my favourites using more natural
bases themes into an abstract concept.
birds
Another, preferred piece would be the portrait of a friend in which I also used the portraits of two of my friends and one of my cousins, with Jamie being the most prominent of them in which I replaced the eyes with that of another friend and my cousin, in addition to this I have adorned his head with various birds and altered the background to create a circular pattern. This gives a phycedelellic appearance demonstrating the layering of reality to create a subjective image that I hope to achieve throughout my artwork.

Tiger
this time combining two facial aspects in proportion to each
other I have spliced an image of my friend with facial aspects of a tiger, this
uses far fewer layers than most of my other pieces and in addition to this did
not have the desired effects, looking visually displeasing, however with the addition
of some effects the image itself can be improved. this piece in addition to
using the style of Hannah Hoch I have also taken elements of peony yips art
style in terms of adding animalistic aspects to an image that overlays the
human face.
Layering
Mostly an experiment of layering different textures such as
scales and moss on the face on one of my friends. overall I believe the effect
do work, however only in smaller amounts, with the moss being my personal
favourite of the textures used as it can be peppered into an image without much
issue. However, I do not believe that the scales will be used again in the
future as they do have the same appeal as either the moss or metal.
Emily
Focusing on the face of my cousin I have used both natural
and technical influences I have covered the left side of her face in an
assortment of wires, foliage, electrical devices and insects over many layers.
This is to represent the more childish and conflicting juxtaposition between
technology and nature using my cousin as a visual for this. Despite not quite
being happy with the visual appearance of this I am happy with the
representation it portrays as I hope to cover this within my art.
Emily bee
Mostly a quality experiment using a much higher quality
images and layering it onto a lower quality image, as expected the resulting
image did not look at all appealing with the combination of high and low
quality.
Emily 3
using a wider area for a combination of natural and manmade
elements I recreated the first image of my cousin, the main differences are the
variety of images used and in addition to covering the face I have also covered
her arms. Most of the component images are natural such as bark, birds and a
tiger, while the technology side includes an image of a pocket watch and wires.
I have mostly a mixed opinion on this piece as despite the bark looks fitting
the other components less so due to the method used to merge them as the tree
was erased in a different way to the others using more of a fragmented method.
The addition of effects would also most likely improve this image.
Luke 2
After the success of the ‘birds’ piece I decided to create
another in a different style but still using the same influences of line and
layer. For this I have used a different person and different elements
Single image layer experiment
In order to further explore stratification I have used a
single image overplayed with a series of effects in which I have then reduced
the opacity to show all the layers together. This is mostly experimental to
examine the use of opacity with different effects, the conclusion from this
would be that all the effects do not look as good as they would without the
additional effects.
Final plan 1
For my final I intend to use wire to create a sculpture
within a drawing, and as a result of this intention I have created a miniature
of a potential outcome for my final in which I have combined elements of line
art, wire and gears to create fox. The wire surrounded internal structures such
as the base of the skull and the ribs that then branch out to replace the tail
white the mechanical gears were placed within the chest cavity. I have chosen
to use this method as my art consists of a lot of line art to mimic wire and
display mechanical structures, in addition to this it also falls under a
combination of the art of Elizabeth Berrien and mike Libby using wire and gears within a structure, I
have attempted to include elements of Hannah Hoch’s work by keeping elements of
two dimensions. This plan is very basic in the thought process as the main
focus is the inclusion or artist styles, however as a result of this it is
unrefined and lacks greater elements of representation to show the
stratification of the perception of reality and fantasy how to biological mechanisms
can be represented as mechanical components working as a larger machine.
2
Using less of a drawn element than the last, however I have
refined the concept using different coloured wire to highlight muscular structures,
in addition to this I have put more detail into the drawn elements despite
being less of them. The appearance has changed to a more angled point of view
showing a fade from wire to drawing instead of having a mix of both, in
addition to this the structures that have been made with wire are also more
refined to look like bone structures.
3
after the second experiment, I decided to take a closer
focus on the process of using deferent types of wire of create bone and muscle,
for this I have manipulated the silver wire into the shape of a fox skull and
the multi-coloured wire into the shape of the muscle around one side. after
completed this I discussed potential applications of wire within my final and
we concluded that there should be a greater inclusion of wire, as a result of
this I decided that it may be best to make the entire fox of wire and use paper
as the backdrop and link to the wall. I believe this method will better
represent my theme of stratification by having less convoluted layers but still
keeping them linked. However the main issue with this piece would most likely
be the time in which it took to create, hence why only half of the face was
covered with the multi coloured wire, this issue may carry on to the final and
as a result of that I will most likely have to avoid including too much fine
detail otherwise there will not be enough time to complete the entire
sculpture.
for my final outcome, I wish to combine nature and
mechanism, to achieve this I have sketched a dog like creature made up of
junkyard and old mechanical materials to give an unstable looking appearance as
if the parts are held together by an unseen force. the main problem with this
would be how to construct this as if I were making a sculpture I would have to
find a lot of parts and if it were a mix of sculpture and drawing then it would
be difficult to combine the layers. in addition to this linking this in with
stratification would be difficult as there is little variation between
materials.
Rough sketches
during a short period of the course the class all of the
students were tasked with creating a series of sketches and observational
drawings using various grayscale mediums such as pencil, graphite and charcoal
with the aim of this task to use line and stroke to achieve a minimalist style
of art. each piece did not take long to create with a shot evaluation of the
medium used to create the pieces of art. almost all of these are observational
drawings using previous photos taken form galleries and other locations of
various subjects or the same subject in a different style.
Jamie charcoal

charcoal is definitely one of my least favourite mediums,
second to chalk as it is far less controllable then pencil or pen in addition
to being much messier. nonetheless the outcome for this particular sketch is
better than expected, partially due to the colours that have run into the piece
after the application of hairspray from the other side that adds a greater
element of abstract to the overall image. the use of charcoal gives the image
greater levels of positive and negative space using contract and depth. I don’t
think I’ll be using charcoal for any other pieces as I really do not like the
medium despite the outcome.
Cheetah charcoal
using a photo from London zoo I have used charcoal to sketch
a simple image of the photo, as charcoal is different from using pencil or pen
I used a slightly different technique in which I used the entire surface of the
charcoal to gain different effects and lines, for example I the longer side of
the charcoal was used to create thicker strokes and large areas of shading
while the thinner sides were used to create finer details, in addition to this
charcoal can also be smudged to create a gradient and reduce the harshness of
lines. I do like the outcome of this piece with the simplicity but still
maintaining its form being recognisably an animal, however I personally do not
enjoy using charcoal therefore I hope not include it in the future.
Butterfly
using pencil, I drew a butterfly from a reference image that
was taken at a butterfly farm, in addition I also added a freehand creature in
to relate it to my theme, for this in particular the focus was to create a
simple shaded sketch. I do enjoy using pencil more than most other mediums
however I do not believe that it looks as striking as using pen for example.
graphite is a similar medium to pencil however it is less
precise and creates a wider line, making it a good medium for quick sketches
and similar projects. this was particularly useful as a time limit was imposed
when creating this series of sketches. the main issue in my opinion with this
medium is that it is harder to achieve darker shades as with pencil a softer
lead can be used, as detail can often be portrayed through the use of shade
rather than detail of line. the piece in itself is not bad however I do not
believe I can achieve the intended shading.
with mark making being the aim for this piece this rough
sketch was drawn using a photo of a friend as a reference image, in order to
create the marks, I used graphite as it creates larger lines that make it an
ideal medium for line and mark making. despite this I do not intend to use
graphite within my more theme based artwork.
using biro pen to draw this piece I attempted to use single
direction strokes in a quick sketch, unfortunately I did not keep up this
style, with the purpose of this to allow different drawing methods to be used
within my sketchbook, this focusing on line and shade. I do feel comfortable
using biro as a medium however it is not a medium that I intend to use within
my work in the future.
Overlapping birds
the aim with this piece is to create a more abstract concept
by overlaying a single image from different rotations. this piece was drawn
using pencil and is two copies of an image of a bird that is part of one of my
photoshop works which features a portrait with a series of birds surrounding his
head. an image like this would work for my theme of stratification, however it
is not how I intend to display the theme, as I intend for the layers to be different
rather than the same thing from a literal different angle.
Jamie continuous line
focusing more on the style of art rather than the type of
medium used I have drawn an image of my friend using continuous line, this
process involves creating a piece using a single line, the resulting image is
far more simplified and tends to appear more angular, however the appearance
itself is distinct. this process is useful for replicating the appearance of
wire, which is useful if there is no wire present. I do hope to use this
process in the future as I intend to use wire in the future.
Concept overlay
using fine liner pen to better define the sketch this is to
allow me to re-evaluate my decision to see if there is some way I can improve
my original plan, however I came to no such conclusion as I could not think of
a suitable way to improve this piece without making it more difficult to carry
out, if there was more time then I would potentially have considered it more.
however, as a result of these experiments I have decided that I want to use
foxes as my focus animal as they ae often found in populated area around
industry as well as being cunning survivalists.
Automaton overlay

using a scan of my observational drawing from the MAD museum
I used fine liner pen to add a skeletal structure to the image to bring it
closer to my theme of the stratification of mechanism and nature, in this case
to show how the mechanism almost appears a mockery of natural creation. I do
like how this image has turned out placing bones within mechanism shows the
closest literal representation of my theme, however being too literal with my
theme may not be the best way to go about it for the entirety of the course
though I do still intent to include such representations within sections in
which I believe appropriate.
Butterfly overlay
for this I, have decided to use a different colour scheme
using greens as oppose to the typical brown and reds, for this I have used
fine-liner pens to add an additional layer over the sketch depicting human eyes
over the wings and a skeletal canid like snout to make the appearance of a mask.
Cheetah overlay
layering over a scan of the cheetah drawn using graphite I
have used seven colours to overlay and depict the muscular structure of the big
cat’s face, to do this I have used fine liner pen and a different colour for
each muscle. this piece has probably turned out the worst out of all the pieces
as the use of colour does not match with the greyscale image.
Giraffe
Using the giraffe created by Andrew chase as a reference
image I have used watercolours to colour
a drawn image, the colours that I have used are grey and blue to show the
metallic nature of the image. I have painted this as a starting point form
which I can expand, as the art style of Andrew chase is very niche and specific
with little variation apart from the type of animal, therefore it would
probably be best to create something as close to the original on a 2D medium. Personally,
I do not enjoy using watercolours in this sense, in addition to this it does
take a while to compete images like this.
Steampunk bird
Using the style of Andrew chase I have drawn a bird in
flight however I have used a different colour scheme to give the image a more
steampunk appearance, in addition I have used shades of yellow on the wings for
an appearance of canvas. This allows me to link the art style of Andrew chase to
my own style in which I want to include more elements of fantasy and surrealism
to better represent stratification. This piece was drawn and shaded using
watercolour crayons, however because of this it did take a while to complete,
therefore I am not considering the use of this method for further
experimentation.
by overlaying a scan of the metallic clockwork, I have changed
the image from an observational drawing to a more surrealist image, this was
achieved by including more steampunk based drawings of mechanical rats
surrounding the image. The overlaying image was drawn using fine liner pen.
Horses
using a scan of the Leonardo horses and inventions I have
used fine liner pen to layer over the scan of the image with steampunk and
biological elements, for the horses I have used mechanical designs and the
inventions biological designs, this is to add juxtaposition to my piece,
representing my theme by layering over with a different medium. like the others
that I have used this style for I do find that this is my preferred way of
representing my theme, however this could be improved by potentially adding
other mediums such as wire.
More of a spontaneous piece in which depicts a child
interacting with three mechanical rats wearing a rat mask. Drawn in fine liner
pen over a pencil sketch I have used a slightly different colour scheme with
pinks for elements of the dress such as the bows to bring a more feminine
aspect to my theme. showing the conflict between what is expected and of us and
what we want, hiding behind a mask to conform and another to conflict. this is
not one of my preferred pieces since I am not pleased with how the child looks
as people are not my strong suit, however considering this I believe that it
has turned out better than expected.
Fawn sketch
Like the others of this series this is another timed piece,
however for this one I used pencil to create a rough sketch of a fawn using a
photo from the nature notes exhibition as a reference. Typically, I only use
pencil to create construction sketches that I later overlay with a different
medium, however larger scale images tend to take a much longer time to
complete, as a result of this I most likely will not be using pencil very much
throughout my coursework.
Crane Using the previous drawing of a mouse I decided to add more motion to this style of art, for this I have drawn a robotic Crane in flight with a spectral Crane above it. For this I, have used blue and brown fine liner pens, with the browns to show a rusted and brassy appearance in the robot and the blues to create the spectral bird. despite how well this piece turned out I do believe that the applications for this style are limited unless some aspect is changed.

HorsesFor this piece I wanted to show a greater representation of personality than with the other pieces in this style, to achieve this I have used different colours to represent different personas with blue for a unicorn and red for a demon. Like the others this piece was drawn in fine liner pens to display the outline. The main issue with this is that it does not follow the complementary colour scheme
Rat clock face
Another piece featuring robotic rats, however these three are all amongst various multi-coloured clock faces and are interacting as though they are physically there, allowing them to appear trapped in time. For this I, have scanned the piece at the start of me sketchbook that features time as a theme, and for the rats I have used black and brown fine liner. I suppose this composition was a little rushed and is apparent though the lack of detail.
Rat pipework
after the drawing of the steampunk deer I have decided to try and use a
similar style of positive and negative space in which pipes are used in a
conical style shape from one side of the page to the other. in this particular
drawing I have used this method however I have included a series of rats amidst
the pipes. this isn’t one of my preferred pieces mostly due to that I was not
able to add the amount of detail than I would have liked to.
in order to
add elements of nature into this drawing I have scanned it and then overlaid it
with red fine liner to appear like muscles over the image. this allows for the
use of juxtaposing to give the symbolism of how mechanisms can be used mimic
and replace nature.
as a style experiment I have taken the image of a robotic
doe and scanned it, the scanned copy was then layered over with red fine liner
to follow the muscular structure of the animal, this allows the image to more
literally fit within my theme however I would rather try to find a different
way to represent it than use literal connotations.
Continuous line red
using a photocopy of the steampunk Doe as a base I have overplayed this with
red fine liner to give a more biological appearance to the image by using red
pen to draw the muscular system over the photocopy, on addition to this I have
also connected the pipework using this method.
Fawn steam
Using a scanned image of a previous sketch I have used fine liner pens and gears to add a mechanical design to this sketch of a seated fawn, in addition I have also added elements of the muscular structure in areas such as the face torso and legs, to achieve this I have used reds and browns to best represent this theme.
Cheetah steamThis is an overlay of a graphite sketch in which I have applied a steampunk theme by using the graphite as construction lines for drawing a stylised skull using dark brown fine liner, this is to make the head of the cheetah appear to be a mechanical construction or helmet.
Red bird
overlaying a sketch with red fine liner I have used the
style of peony yip, however I have applied this to a mask rather than adding
animalistic features, in addition to this I have also overlaid some of the
birds in addition to this as well as added some cogs to give a steampunk appearance,
this allows the image to fit in with my theme of industry and nature using
stratification.
Red beak
following more closely to the style of peony yip I have
overlaid a sketch of Jamie’s face with bird features in addition to this I have
also added birds around the outside using elements of continuous line art,
other areas of detail include the eyes and certain human features. the image that
I have used as a reference is one of my photoshop pieces and as a result it is
in a surrealist and distorted style. this focuses more on manipulating the
artist style rather than applying to the theme.
